At Hampstead and Frognal Tutors, we uphold the highest standards through a rigorous recruitment process. Each tutor undergoes multiple stages of assessment, including detailed applications, in-depth interviews, and Enhanced DBS certification. This meticulous approach ensures that only the best tutors join our team. Moreover, we support our tutors with ongoing professional development, ensuring their methods remain innovative and effective.
Unlike traditional classroom settings, where teaching must cater to a group, our tutors focus solely on the individual. They understand that every student learns differently, progresses at their own pace, and encounters unique challenges. By creating a personalised learning plan, our tutors address specific difficulties—whether it’s quadratic equations, probability, or trigonometry—and turn them into strengths.
Our tutors also connect Maths to real-world applications, demonstrating its importance beyond exams. They show students how concepts like simultaneous equations and the Cosine rule play a role in problem-solving, critical thinking, and everyday decision-making. This approach not only prepares students for academic success but also equips them with valuable life skills.
For those unable to attend in-person sessions, we offer cutting-edge online tuition. Using platforms like Zoom and interactive shared whiteboards, we deliver the same high-quality experience to students anywhere in the world. Our GCSE and IGCSE revision courses, conducted in small groups of no more than six, have also proven to be highly effective. These courses provide intensive support, ensuring students approach their exams with confidence.
Our tutors are dedicated to achieving results that exceed expectations. Here are just a few highlights of our students’ success:
100% of our GCSE students improved their academic performance and surpassed their predicted grades.
95% of students achieved at least two grades higher than initially forecast.
Students consistently report finding Maths easier and more enjoyable after participating in our tailored tuition programmes and revision courses.
Whether your child is aiming for top grades, needs a confidence boost, or wants to rediscover the joy of learning Maths, our tutors are here to help. At Hampstead and Frognal Tutors, we bring out the best in every student, turning challenges into opportunities and goals into achievements.
Matthew is a superb GCSE maths tutor. His manner is just right for my son; patient, understanding and highly motivating especially since maths doesn’t come easily for him. We were so impressed we asked Matthew to support our other children. My son went from a predicted grade 5 up to an 8. Very impressed.

GCSEs have changed a lot in the past few years. The government has made the exams more challenging, rigorous and wide-ranging.
As you probably are aware the GCSE grading system is defined by levels 1-9, where 9 is the highest mark stduents can achieve. Our tutors are well acquainted with the grading system and can answer any queries you or your child may have.
Our GCSE and IGCSE Maths tutors have prepared students for all exam boards, including OCR, AQA, and Edexcel. Key aspects of the different syllabi is set out below.
The OCR GCSE Mathematics (9-1) syllabus is structured to help students develop fluency in mathematical methods, competence in problem-solving, and the ability to reason mathematically. It focuses on building confidence in applying mathematics to real-world situations.
Candidates either sit the foundation level (papers 1, 2 & 3) or higher level papers (4, 5 & 6). Foundation level students can score grades 1-5. Candidates aiming for levels 6-9 and are confident of achieving at least a level 6 should sit the higher level papers (levels 4-9).

By systematically revising these topics and honing exam techniques, students will be well-prepared to excel in the OCR GCSE Mathematics (9-1) exams.
The AQA GCSE Mathematics (8300) syllabus is designed to develop students’ mathematical reasoning, fluency, and problem-solving skills. It covers a range of mathematical concepts and ensures students are equipped to apply their knowledge in real-life contexts. The mathematical demand of the questions increases as students progress through the paper. Each exam counts for a third of a student’s overall mark.
Candidates either sit the foundation level or higher level papers
The Edexcel GCSE Mathematics syllabus focuses on developing fluency in mathematical techniques, reasoning mathematically, and problem-solving skills. The course encourages students to apply their knowledge in real-world and abstract mathematical contexts.
Students take three written exams each worth 80 marks, and lasting 1 hour 30 minutes:
All three papers cover the full syllabus, and the course is divided into two tiers:
